Etlingera
venusta - Malay Rose - Porcelain ginger
Plant
the seeds at 1/2" in a well draining soil mixture. Keep warm (80F)-,
damp, in bright light, with hight humidity (cover pots with a plastic
sheet)
Fagrea
berteriana - Perfume flower tree - Puakenikeni
Broadcast the seeds on the surface of your soil mixture. Keep lightly
damp and at 80F. Provide birght light.
Gardenia
Jasminoides - Cape jasmine
Sow 1/8" deep at 75 degrees F. Keep moist and damp by covering the pot
with a plastic sheet. Germination occurs between 21 - 60 days.
Gardenias should be planted in well conditioned soil containing peat
moss and compost Cultivating around the plants may damage their shallow
roots, so the plant should be mulched with 2 to 3 inches of wood chips,
sawdust or ground bark to keep the soil moist, cool and weed free. Feed
the plants every three weeks during the growing season with a
rhododendron-azalea food, or acidifying fertilizer. (Miracid)
Proper temperatures are necessary for a gardenia to bloom. This is the
most critical aspect. Flower buds will fail to form if day temperatures
are higher than 70degrees or night temperatures are over 65 degrees or
less than 60 degrees. The ideal temperature ranges would be 65 to 70
degrees during the day and 60 to 62 degrees at night.
Gazania
rigens - Gazania sunshine
Sow January for pack/pot production flowering late April - May. Sow end
of February to March for summer planting. Sow at 70F. Cover with an
average layer of vermiculite/seed compost. Germination usually takes
1-2 weeks.
Gloriosa
rothschildiana - Climbing Glory Lily
Avoid cold temperature. Keep warm and damp and in bright light. Plant
at a depth of 2" using well draining soil mixture. Fertilize weekly
using a balanced fertilizer ( a houseplant fertilizer ).
Guava
psidium - Guajava
Lightly cover with sand/compost soil mixture, keep warm, damp and in
bright light. Fertilize lightly each week.
Hedychium
Flavum - Yellow ginger
The small seeds are slow germinating - up to 8 weeks depending on the
soil temperature. Plant at 1/2' depth using soil mixture. Be sure they
are kept warm - 70 F degrees is ideal. Provide bright light and keep
lightly moist.
Helianthus
annuus - Autumn Beauty Sunflower
Sow March to May, thinly, ½ inch deep in drills 12 inches
apart in well cultivated soil raked to a fine tilth. Germination
usually takes around 21 days. When large enough to handle, thin
seedlings to 12 inches apart. Alternatively, you can sow indoors in
late winter/early spring for earlier flowering. Sow individually into 3
inch pots at 68-86F. When well grown, gradually acclimatise to outdoor
conditions before planting out after all risk of frost. Prefers a well
drained soil in full sun. Flowers mid/late summer to autumn.
Helianthus
annuus - Sunflower Teddy Bear
Sunflower
Valentine
Sow March to May, thinly, ½ inch deep in drills 12 inches
apart in well cultivated soil raked to a fine tilth. Germination
usually takes around 21 days
Heliconia
(wagnerina, latispatha, sclerotricha, aemygdiana)
Plant at a depth of 3/4" using well draining soil
mix, containing peat moss, organic matter and coarse sand. Keep warm,
damp and in bright, filtered light with high humidity. (can be acheived
by covering the pot with a plastic sheet)Fertilize weekly. Can be slow
germinating and sporadic
Hesperis
matronalis - Dames Rocket
Sow May - June at 60-65 F 1/8"deep
Hibiscus
Lasiocarpus
Hibiscus
Militaris
Hibiscus
Swamb
Seeds can be sown in drills 1 inch deep in light soil
in May or June. The seedlings are transplanted, 6 inches apart, in a
nursery bed and set in their final positions in the fall. They may also
be divided.
Ipomoea
- Morning Glory
Morning glory can be direct seeded into the soil after
the last frost, but you will have much earlier blooms if you plant
indoors 5-6 weeks ahead of time. They are a little tricky to transfer.
Use little peat pots that can be put directly into the soil where you
want the plant to grow. The seed of the morning glory is very hard. I
soak mine overnight before planting to soften the hard shell. Growing
morning glories is easy; keeping them where you want them is a little
more difficult. You will notice that soon after a bloom fades a
perfectly round capsule forms. This is full of tiny black seeds. Once
it dries the capsule opens and morning glory seeds drop everywhere.
Unless you are so diligent as to cut off EVERY pod they will spread and
reseed.
Iris
siberica - siberian Iris
Plant in late fall for bloom next spring
Jacaranda
mimosifolia - Blue Jacaranda
Soak seeds over night and sow 1/16" deep by 70-75F degrees. Germination
occurs in 2-4 weeks.
Jiaogulan
Easy to germinate. Cover slightly with soil and water
regularry. Should germinate within 4 weeks.
Koelreuteria
paniculata - Golden Rain Tree
They can be sown in a cold frame in the late fall. (You may also
simulate this by soaking the seed, placing it in soil, and putting the
container in the refrigerator for three weeks.) Then you can place the
container in a sunny window and watch your golden rain tree grow. The
golden rain tree is no small tree; it can reach 30 feet or more. So
place these trees in well-drained soil and full sun and let them reach
their full potential.
Kolkwitzia
amabilis - Beautybush
Cold stratify for 3 months. After stratification sow
1/4 inch deep in sterilized gardening soil and place container at about
70 degrees. Some seeds may germinate within a few days, but germination
tends to be sporadic and may occur over an extended period of time.
Keep soil moist at all time. After germination seedlings need bright
light and cool enviroment. Alternatively seeds can be fall sown for
germination in spring
