BLUE JACARANDA, Jacaranda mimosifolia is native to Argentina and Bolivia, a deciduous tree that grows up to 50 feet tall in its native habitat. In tropical and subtropical climates, it puts on a spectacular flowering display in spring to summer when 2" long blue-purple flowers appear in 12-inch terminal panicles and literally cover the tree. In more northern areas, these make excellent potted patio plants that can be overwintered inside. These may also be grown as year round houseplants or even grow as unique bonsai specimens. With its large fern-like leaves, the tree itself is very attractive even when not in bloom. Its leaves resemble those of mimosa and is sometimes commonly called 'fern tree'. Easily propagated from seed and relatively fast growing.
